The Camden Haven
Half way between Taree and Port Macquarie, on the mid north coast or Holiday Coast of NSW is The Camden Haven, a region whose river, after which it is named was discovered by the explorer, John Oxley in 1818. This beautiful waterway flows 50 km east from the rugged Comboyne Plateau through majestic state forests and rich farm lands to a coast of pristine uncrowded beaches and breathtaking views.
North Brother Mountain, named by Captain James Cook in 1770 hovers 1607 feet (500m) above Laurieton protecting it from western weather and offering one of the most stunning coastal views in Australia. The most popular attraction, "Big Brother" as locals call it, has a lookout and picnic area on top that is easily accessible by sealed road and is a magic place to have breakfast on a clear morning.
The Camden Haven's seaside villages of Laurieton, Dunbogan, North Haven, Bonny Hills and Lake Cathie (pron: Cat-eye) are traditional holiday towns renowned for their relaxed atmosphere and the multitude of outdoor activities to suit every taste, pocket and age.
The Camden Haven claims some of the best weather in Australia. Winter days are usually cool and clear, perfect for exploring the countryside and the many tearooms, gardens, galleries, wineries, nurseries, arts and crafts, and heritage sites in the area. Summer is perfect for pursuing a water-based activity or taking a walk through a National Park, State Forest or a Coastal Reserve.
The Camden Haven is a nature lover's dream and a great place for a visit or a more permanent relocation.
